A Roast Fit for a Mayor

April 1, 2017 – Milton, Canada: Saturday evening’s Comedy Roast of Mayor Gord Krantz–raising funds for Milton Transitional Housing (MTH)–was a night punctuated with light-hearted jabs, humour, and humility as the beloved Milton mayor was playfully skewered by colleagues, family, and friends. Taking place at the Milton Banquet and Conference Centre on Steeles Avenue, the event comprised a silent auction, light food and drink while those who know him best gathered to alternatively poke fun at and praise Krantz–his status as Canada’s longest serving mayor at 36 years was at the heart of a few jokes, as well as his better-known quirks and history as a lifelong Miltonian.

Emceed by Donna Danielli, executive director of MTH, who showed her own hidden comedic talents throughout the night; 12 “roasters,” including a number of Milton’s town councillors, longtime Miltonians such as Lesley Mansfield (who entered the room wearing Krantz Fuels coveralls, Krantz owned and operated Krantz Fuels from 1961 until 1980), and family members like his younger brother Bob, took turns telling tales such as neighbours spotting a shirtless mayor in the yard, quips around Krantz’s best-known one-liners, as well as hints suggesting the “real mayor of Milton” is actually Krantz’s wife, Olive. But it was Mayor Krantz who set the record straight (he had been taking notes throughout the evening). True to form, Krantz closed the night by addressing each of his roasters like the good sport that he is, earning a few guffaws of his own!
